Members reflected deeply on whether they ever thought they would get HIV, with the vast majority sharing that they never imagined it would happen to them, while a few in the gay community during the 1980s felt it was almost inevitable. Several members described the shock of diagnosis coming through blood donations, committed relationships, drug use, or a single unprotected encounter, and many shared that accepting responsibility helped them move forward. A recurring theme was resilience, with members celebrating decades of survival, undetectable status, and gratitude for modern medicine and the support of family and faith.

@A myHIVteam Member. I think we all did. It's one thing to know something, and another to feel it emotionally. I knew everything about HIV that was known at the time, but still didn't change my behavior. Late night, high, and with a stranger is not the time to engage in rational behavior. Funny thing, though, testing HIV+ changed my behavior overnight. I was willing to risk my own health, but not the health of anyone else.

I didn’t plan on getting HIV but I had the feeling that I would, due to my level of sexual activity. Basically I carried on like I always did previously to it’s emergence

I knew it was a big possibility, being homosexual promiscuous on drugs. It was always a known danger.

Never in a million years did I think I would get HIV. It's a hard one to wrap around my head. 10 years now. Just blows me away.
