Language matters. Do you see the virus as a 'roommate' you didn't ask for, a 'battle' you’re winning, or just a quiet line item on your medical chart like blood pressure?

Members described their relationship with HIV in deeply personal ways, ranging from seeing it as an unwanted but manageable roommate to simply a quiet line on their medical chart. Many community members shared that after years of living with the virus, the focus shifted toward empowerment through healthy habits, staying informed about treatments like Biktarvy and Dovato, and advocating with their doctors. A recurring theme was resilience and self-care, with members finding comfort in community connection and celebrating the lives they continue to build.

It's like a relative you do not really like much, but is part of your family and you cannot get rid of, you have to deal with the drama it causes, without letting it take over your life.

After 25 years, I'm happy to say that I'd describe our relationship as manageable, mutually respectful.

I feel it’s just part of my medical record but I do try to take care of myself by eating healthy and excercising. I pay attention to HIV treatments, as a matter of fact I suggested to my doctor on trying Biktarvy when I heard about. I sometimes wonder how long it may taken him to tell me about it. I suffer from kidney disease due to the early harsh HIV drugs and read about how o can take better care of myself. All this is empowering for me and I feel it’s helping cope and feel good about living.
