Switching from a daily pill to an injection every month or two is a big change — but many people find it a welcome one! Here's what's good to know about Cabenuva:
Cabenuva is a combination of two medications (cabotegravir and rilpivirine) given as an injection into the buttocks muscle. It works in two different ways to stop HIV from making copies of itself and keep your viral load undetectable. To be a candidate for Cabenuva, your viral load generally needs to be below 50 copies per milliliter for at least 3 to 6 months, and you shouldn't have any known resistance to either of its medications. Before starting the injections, your doctor may have you take oral versions of the same medications for one month first. This "oral lead-in" helps confirm you tolerate them well before committing to the longer-lasting injectable form, which can stay in your body for up to 12 months. A few important things to keep in mind:
- Injections are given monthly, and may switch to every two months if things go well
- Getting injections on time is really important — missing or being more than 7 days late can lead to drug resistance
- If you know you'll miss an injection, oral backup medications can be taken in the meantime
- Injection site reactions (soreness, etc.) are the most common side effect but are generally mild Research shows that people who struggled with remembering daily pills often find it easier to stick with Cabenuva — and in clinical trials, a high percentage of people maintained undetectable viral loads on it. It's just as effective as oral treatment options.
As always, your doctor is the best person to guide what's right for your specific situation. 💉

I was on cabenuva. I really liked it. had to go off it when I had my heart surgery. insurance didn't cover the entire cost, and MICHIGAN Ryan White did not cover the remaining. ended up using the manufacturer discount to cover the cost. for me, the first shots hurt. the second time it wasn't as bad, the third time just some minor irritation, and after that they were not bad at all. but that was my experience.

I switched to Cabenuva two years ago now, I found taking the pill added to weight in my stomach which went away quickly once I switched to Cabenuva. I don’t care for injection days but it is very quick and over within minutes…..it is also a good check in and keeps me aware of the importance to good health and staying active…..
