Members reflected on a question about giving the benefit of the doubt versus forgiveness, with the overwhelming consensus being that forgiveness is primarily an act of self-care and healing, as holding grudges or resentments only harms the person carrying them. Several members shared their personal approaches, including forgiving quickly for their own peace while maintaining healthy boundaries by remembering past hurts, giving the benefit of the doubt once but not repeatedly, and distinguishing between honest mistakes deserving grace versus repeat offenses requiring firmer limits. A recurring theme was the importance of accepting reality without self-blame, surrounding yourself with supportive people, and recognizing that forgiveness is a gift you give yourself rather than something owed to the other person.

Depends on the topic. You only get the benefit of the doubt once.

Hmmmm let me perhaps reframe this? Holding a grudge only hurts me (or hurts the one holding the grudge). So when we forgive the gift is more to ourselves than others.

Forgiveness can be tough depending on circumstances yet do my best to come to terms with forgiveness as soon as possible for my own healing! Lack of forgiveness can harbor resentments.

As @A myHIVteam Member mentioned, forgiveness is an act of self-love. So, I’m quick to forgive, unfortunately I have an elephant’s memory. First time, shame on you, second time… well u know where I’m going with this…

Be kind to urself, enjoy your journey and surround urself with those who support and love u unconditionally.

For me benefit of the doubt, acknowledges the human factor. No ones perfect. Forgiveness of for the repeat offender or more severe issues.
