Unexpected Lab Results-ketones High?
A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭

Just got over a kidney infection. Labs said high ketones (ketoacidosis) high proteins and low CO2-all signs if diabetes. I don't and never have done anything to merit this, a life of exercise and good diet with no sweets or soda. Is this a thing with HIV and meds?

Wow... What did the doctor say? Do you have to be put on diabetic medication?

It would depend on whats contributing to it. It wouldn't surprise me one bit it you have certain types of neuropathies, it would affect your endocrine system or make us more insulin resistant and cause a host of other metabolic issues. Something has to explain the weight gain and hard belly fat. The Dr's are always telling up to eat right and exercise without telling us what's the cause of the weight gain in the first place. I think the meds boost something that was already going on as a result of HIV. I've seen articles where they said people that suffered from wasting syndrome have higher rates of metabolic issues after starting art.

Perhaps a long term affect of your antivirals.. Google them and look up the chemical component in your cocktail and research the side effects over the years..
