Too much added sugar can be especially problematic when living with HIV. It's recommended to keep added sugar below 10% of your total daily calories.

Here's why excess sugar is a concern:

- Immune function – High sugar intake may suppress immune function, which is already a key focus when managing HIV
- Mood – Sugar can negatively affect mood, which matters for overall well-being
- Weight gain – Excess sugar contributes to obesity, and weight management is important on antiretroviral therapy (ART)
- Metabolic risks – People with HIV already face a higher risk of conditions like high triglycerides and blood sugar issues, and too much sugar can make these worse The good news is that reducing sugar is very manageable with small swaps — like choosing whole fruits over sugary snacks or drinks. Staying hydrated with water instead of sugary beverages is a great first step.

Always check in with your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian to get personalized guidance on your diet while on ART.

I am the worst person to ask about sugar intake

Seriously, I drink a cube of sodas (24pk) in less than a week - always Mt. Dew Baja Blast or Voltage (I even keep 3 cans on my night stand before bed)

I take my coffee large, iced, 8 pumps of caramel, 12 sugars melted, extra milk (whole).

I put 4 table spoons of sugar in my Frosted Flakes

I think we established I consume a LOT of sugar........

but, my sugars are taken 1hr after meals and frequently and they don't go above 100, in fact during my last hospitalization the staff thought my sugars should be at least 500+ but they were not, and the doctors were actually pissed that my A1C was 5.

IDK
