Is a firm and hard stomach healthy?

A firm, hard stomach isn't typically healthy - it's often a sign of lipodystrophy, a condition where fat redistributes abnormally in your body. With lipodystrophy, visceral fat (the hard fat) builds up around your organs in the abdomen, creating that firm, hard belly appearance.

This type of fat buildup can lead to several health concerns:

- High cholesterol levels
- Insulin resistance
- Increased risk of cardiovascular disease
- Type 2 diabetes

Lipodystrophy is different from regular weight gain. It's specifically related to fat redistribution that can happen with HIV or as a side effect of certain HIV medications, particularly older ones.

Many myHIVteam members have shared similar experiences. One member described gaining 30 pounds of solid mass in their belly within four months without any diet or exercise changes.

If you're experiencing a hard belly, it's important to talk with your doctor. They can help determine if it's lipodystrophy and discuss treatment options, which may include lifestyle changes like a low-fat diet and exercise, medication adjustments, or other interventions.

Like a 6-pack? For the last 4 years, my meds made me look pregnant. I have always had a gym bod up until then and felt like I had another persons body in my mid-section, like a Frankenstein. I stopped all sex and dating and it really tugged at my esteem as I tried many different things to get rid of it. I finally found a routine including a special diet (keto, no carbs) and heavy exercise that has flattened it and I look and feel so much healthier. I used wheeze going up stairs or playing my team sports and just felt sluggish all the time. Dating again too now. I'm too old to have a 6-pack again but will answer YES, it's good for physical and mental health! I'm unsure of the answer before mine but YES to flat tummy, NO to lipodystrophy.
