Dovato is a popular two-drug, single-tablet regimen (STR), but there are several other once-a-day alternatives that healthcare providers often recommend depending on a person's specific health profile (such as kidney health, weight, or coinfections like Hepatitis B).
Here are the most common "one pill, once a day" alternatives:
1. Biktarvy (Bictegravir / Emtricitabine / Tenofovir Alafenamide) Often considered the most direct alternative to Dovato, Biktarvy is a three-drug regimen. Pros: Highly effective, has a high "barrier to resistance" (meaning the virus has a hard time mutating around it), and is a first-choice treatment for many. Key Difference: Unlike Dovato, Biktarvy is safe for people who also have Hepatitis B because it contains Tenofovir.
2. Triumeq (Dolutegravir / Abacavir / Lamivudine)Triumeq uses the same primary drug as Dovato (Dolutegravir) but adds Abacavir. Pros: A well-established three-drug single tablet. Key Difference: You must take a blood test for a specific gene HLA-B*5701 before starting it to ensure you aren't allergic to the Abacavir component.
3. Juluca (Dolutegravir / Rilpivirine)Like Dovato, this is a two-drug "nuke-free" (NRTI-sparing) regimen. Pros: Fewer drugs in the body, which some people prefer for long-term health. Key Difference: It is typically only used for people who are already virologically suppressed (viral load is "undetectable") and must be taken with a meal.
4. Symtuza (Darunavir / Cobicistat / Emtricitabine / Tenofovir Alafenamide)This is a four-drug single tablet that includes a protease inhibitor. Pros: Often recommended for people who might have some baseline resistance to other HIV medications. Key Difference: It must be taken with food.
5. Other STRs (Single-Tablet Regimens)
Odefsey / Complera: These are NNRTI-based single tablets. Odefsey is the newer version with a safer form of Tenofovir (TAF).
Delstrigo: A newer three-drug combination (Doravirine / Lamivudine / TDF).
