Has anyone had to let a casual sexual partner know. Obviously I didn’t know when we were sleeping together. And I found out my diagnosis during a routine check up. I’m terrified, and have limited all contact and physical meet ups with this person. I’m apart of a smaller gaming community where I met this person. And I’ve had so much anxiety, fear, disgust towards myself. I know there are programs to let them know anonymously. But I scared they’ll know anyways, and then basically shame publicly… read more

The person who may have exposed the virus to me. Did tell me that, I should be checked. I don’t think I followed through at the time. I did get checked when there was a possibility of an LTR. After I got my results I was asked to give all the people I HD contact with. I didn’t do it. Back then it was mandatory reporting. Early 90s.
In today’s world. Technically you should still be accepted into your gaming group. However, people are still not as accepting. So if you do decide to share it with the individual. It could potentially end any friendships you have with this group. And possibly others outside the group.
As far as telling this individual. You don’t have to tell the person what the outcome is. You could say. Something like I get tested for stds every 6 months. Plant the seed that the person should get tested if not tested recently.
Also there is a chance that the person knows they are infected. And choose not to tell or go on meds. I personally waited about 12 years before I started meds.

If you can't do it. I'd just let the health department do it. It's best to tap him on his shoulder now. Then him possibly infect someone else.

How do I tell a casual sexual partner about my HIV diagnosis?

First, please know that the guilt and anxiety you're feeling are completely understandable, but you didn't know your status when you were together. Finding out during a routine checkup shows you're being responsible about your health.

You're right that notifying past partners is important, even if you're no longer together, since they might have been exposed. The good news is you have options that can protect your privacy.

Your local health department can notify past partners anonymously without giving them your name. This is a confidential service designed exactly for situations like yours. They can also help you navigate this if you're worried about the person's reaction or potential public shaming.

If you prefer, you can work with a social worker who can help you handle this disclosure in a way that feels safe and protects your identity, especially given your concerns about the gaming community.

A myHIVteam member shared a similar experience: "I've told my potential partner, and he wasn't turned off by my status... Telling someone else was scary. But, at the same time, it made me feel more confident about my status and how I want to move forward in life."

You're doing the right thing by wanting to let them know. Using anonymous notification services can help you fulfill this responsibility while protecting yourself from potential stigma.
