How can you improve energy levels and fight fatigue while living with HIV?

The most important step is taking your antiretroviral therapy (ART) medications as prescribed to keep your viral load consistently undetectable. Beyond that, here are six strategies that can help:

1. Stay physically active
Even though it may feel counterintuitive when you're tired, regular exercise is one of the best ways to reduce fatigue. You don't need a gym membership - walking, stretching, yoga, or tai chi can all be helpful. Exercise also helps manage conditions like depression, diabetes, or heart disease that may contribute to fatigue.

2. Listen to your body about rest
Balance activity with rest. Don't push yourself too hard, but do try to get your heart rate up. Some days your body just needs more rest, and that's okay.

3. Develop good sleep hygiene
Go to bed and wake up at the same time daily. Keep your bedroom cool (around 65°F), dim lights before bedtime, and avoid screens for an hour before sleep. Reduce alcohol and caffeine intake, especially 3-4 hours before bed.

4. Eat a healthy, balanced diet
Proper nutrition strengthens your immune system and helps prevent anemia, which can cause fatigue. Make sure you're getting enough iron, vitamin B12, and folate.

5. Take care of your mental health
Depression is a common cause of fatigue in people with HIV. Address these feelings with your healthcare team.

6. Talk to your doctor about medication side effects
Some HIV medications can affect sleep and energy. Your healthcare team can help adjust your treatment plan to minimize side effects.
