If Immodium doesn't work, there's also a stronger med available, though it's usually by prescription. It's called Lomotil. It worked wonders for me for a while until I had a med change and started on a new diabetes med. The med change helped to get things on track for me on the most part, but then when I started on Ozempic, I found that the constipation effects of the Ozempic perfectly cancelled out the diarrhea effects of my HIV meds.

Common causes of diarrhea with HIV:

- Antiretroviral medications (especially protease inhibitors)
- Opportunistic infections (parasites, fungi, bacteria)
- HIV directly affecting the gut
- Certain types of cancer, such as lymphomas

Treatment options:

If it's due to ART medications, diarrhea usually clears up after the first few weeks or months. In some cases, it may be necessary to change the medication.

For diarrhea without a specific infectious cause, your doctor may prescribe:
- Loperamide (Imodium)
- Crofelemer
- Probiotics (taken for more than 30 days may help)

Some members of myHIVteam have found relief with Metamucil and by increasing fiber and water in their diet.

It is crucial to contact your doctor to determine the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment, especially if you have symptoms such as weight loss, fever, blood in your stool, or dehydration.
