I have recently received an HIV diagnosis, which clarifies the etiology of my current symptoms. My physician has indicated that my health is significantly compromised, with laboratory values lower than anticipated. Consequently, I have been advised to minimize social contact, utilize personal protective equipment(mask), and adhere strictly to my prescribed medication regimen. Regrettably, my medication, Biktarvy, will not be available until Monday.

Given my historical preference for holistic… read more

When i lived in Seattle shortly after i was diagnosed. I chose a more holistic approach. Through a natural path through a licensed partitioner. I didn’t want to use pills yet. Due to the toxicity and side affects. How over 10 years later i had to go on meds. The good in waiting for me was that the meds improved in effectiveness, not as toxic to the body and side affects were minimal.
I do believe a holistic approach along with scientific research medicine can both be beneficial.

Yes. I looked like the crypt keeper. I like holistic medicine as well. It does help. I like things that focus on autophagy. Keep doing what you was doing. I like to think that's why HIV didn't show up as harsh as it should have for me. And the bounce back was easier.

Hello,

Thank you for your response. I will be starting my medication on Monday. I am not opposed to medication. I was unaware of my illness until recently. It appears I have been experiencing symptoms for several years and had been pursuing a holistic approach, which is my preference, but this was also due to my lack of knowledge regarding my HIV status.
But, I serve a powerful God. I think he is the reason I've been not sick....He most certainly is the reason I found out.

How can starting HIV treatment help restore vitality and appearance after a recent diagnosis with advanced infection?

It's completely understandable to feel apprehensive about starting treatment, especially given your preference for holistic approaches. The good news is that modern HIV medications like Biktarvy are generally well-tolerated, and many people experience significant improvements in how they look and feel once treatment begins.

What to expect with treatment:

When you start antiretroviral therapy, it works to lower your viral load and allow your immune system to recover. As your CD4 counts improve and the virus becomes suppressed, many people notice:

* Increased energy levels and reduced fatigue
* Weight stabilization or healthy weight gain
* Return of vitality and improved appearance
* Better overall sense of well-being

Regarding side effects:

Today's HIV medications cause far fewer side effects than older treatments. While some people experience mild symptoms initially (like headache or nausea), these often resolve within the first few weeks. Serious long-term side effects are much less common with current medications.

About appearance and vitality:

Many myHIVteam members have shared that they noticed improvements in their appearance after starting treatment. The "lifeless" look you're describing often reflects the toll HIV takes on your body when untreated. As your immune system strengthens with consistent medication use, that vitality typically returns.

Your doctor's advice about minimizing exposure and wearing a mask makes sense given your compromised immune system right now. Once treatment brings your viral load down and your CD4 counts up, your risk of infections will decrease significantly.
