Does HIV cause dry skin or itching?

Yes, HIV can be associated with skin changes including itching and dryness. Skin issues are quite common - as many as 9 out of 10 people living with HIV develop a rash or other skin change at some point.

HIV-related rashes can appear in various places on your body, including:
- Face
- Palms of hands and soles of feet
- Torso
- Legs and arms

These rashes may develop soon after infection or later on. They can occur as a direct result of HIV itself, from other infections that develop due to a weakened immune system, or occasionally as a side effect of HIV medications.

One specific condition that can cause itchy, flaky patches is dermatitis. This can be triggered by immune problems from HIV, or by irritants like chemicals, jewelry, or other substances that bother your skin.

If you're experiencing new or worsening skin changes, it's worth talking to your doctor. They can help determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment to help you feel more comfortable.
