Is it very noticeable physically when a person has HIV, and does antiretroviral treatment affect this?

Generally, HIV itself doesn't change a person's physical appearance, especially when they're taking antiretroviral therapy (ART). Someone living with HIV typically looks just like anyone else.

Early Stage HIV:
During acute infection (the first 2-4 weeks), some people experience flu-like symptoms that resolve on their own:
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Rash
- Sore throat

However, 10-60% of people have no symptoms at all during this stage.

Chronic Stage with Treatment:
When someone consistently takes ART medications, they can maintain their health for decades. The medications reduce viral load and help prevent disease progression. During this stage, there are typically no visible physical signs.

Advanced Stage without Treatment:
Only in very advanced stages of HIV (AIDS), when someone isn't taking medications and their CD4 count drops below 200, might visible signs appear, such as:
- Significant weight loss
- Mouth sores or thrush
- Skin lesions
- Discolored spots on skin

The key point: With proper antiretroviral treatment, HIV remains largely invisible physically, and people can live healthy, normal-looking lives.
