The shift in HIV care between 1981 and 2025 is one of the most significant transformations in medical history. It is a journey from a "mystery death sentence" to a "manageable chronic condition," and now, in 2025, toward a "long-term prevention and remission" model.
Here is how the landscape has fundamentally changed over the last 44 years.
There are still long term effects with the newer medication it's a choice we made and a risk we take.

Life and living has trade off's.
Back in 1981 I was a phlebotomist in Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. We were required to ware a gown. Shoe covers, face mask, hair net and gloves. This was due to the unknown of AIDS/HIV. I walked into a young man’s room …….i could not draw his blood due to the fact i was dressed with so much on top of me. I took the hair net , gown, boot covers, mask off and became human. I was able to draw his blood and went to the lab. So many people freaked out. I loved another day only to receive the cute October 16,1995
Prevention: From "Fear" to "PrEP"
In 1981, prevention was based entirely on behavioral change (abstinence or condoms) driven by fear.
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis): Since 2012, HIV-negative people can take a pill to prevent infection. In 2025, we now have twice-yearly PrEP injections, making the virus nearly 100% preventable for those with access.
U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable): This is the most world-changing shift in stigma. We now know that someone on effective treatment with an undetectable viral load cannot pass the virus to partners. This concept didn't exist in 1981 and wasn't fully "official" until the mid-2010s.
