Can HIV be transmitted if both people have open, bleeding wounds in their mouths and share a drink?

This is a very low-risk situation, but there is a theoretical possibility of transmission. HIV is present in blood, and for transmission to occur, the virus needs to enter the bloodstream. If both people have actively bleeding wounds in their mouths and share the same drink immediately, blood from one person could potentially contact the open wound of another.

However, several factors make actual transmission unlikely:

- HIV doesn't survive well outside the body and becomes less infectious when exposed to air
- Saliva contains enzymes that can break down HIV
- The amount of blood transferred through shared drinks is typically minimal
- The virus would need to enter the bloodstream through the open wound at sufficient levels

That said, sharing drinks when you have bleeding mouth wounds isn't recommended for general health reasons beyond HIV, including risk of other infections.

If you're concerned about potential exposure, contact your healthcare provider or local HIV clinic about post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), which must be started within 72 hours of potential exposure to be effective.
