Members shared a variety of practical tips for preventing sickness in the winter, with the original post highlighting the importance of briefly opening windows to refresh indoor air quality and prevent stale air buildup from furnaces. Several members added strategies like using high-rated HVAC filters, UV lights in ventilation systems, regular handwashing, wearing masks, and taking supplements such as Vitamin C, Vitamin D, zinc, and elderberry. A recurring theme was the value of protecting overall well-being through a combination of fresh air, nutrition, and mental health practices like meditation and stress management.

People get sick in the winter because they stay in their houses. How often are you in your house in the summer? In the summer, people are outside getting fresh air all day, while in the winter, they are locked up in their houses all day.
Well staying in your house all day, with the windows closed because it is cold outside, causes some problems. Your furnace will keep recirculating that same air, over, and over, and over, and over, and over. After a while that stale air breaks down, and you are breathing it, and that is why people get sick. Now imagine breathing the same stale air that 3 or 4 other people are breathing as well, in the same house. That is why people in the same house seem to all get sick at the same time.
When I was first diagnosed with HIV, my doctor told me to open my windows for about 30 minutes per week in the winter to let fresh air into my house, allowing the furnace to recirculate fresh air and remove stale air. You don’t have to open the windows wide; just open one window in every room about half an inch or one and a half centimeters.
Also, as always, keep your hands washed/clean, and cover your mouth when coughing. If sickness is all around your area, then wear a mask to help prevent you from getting sick.
So, since we are in the thick of winter right now, go open those windows for a bit to get some fresh air into your house so that you do not get sick!
NOTE: The same is true for those who stay in their houses all day in the summer with the air conditioner running. You need to open those windows to get the fresh air in. The air conditioner will do the same as the furnace, recirculate the same air over, and over, and over.

No one has mentioned mental health. I guard my mental health as it's very valuable to me. I do not and try not to stress out and keep my blood pressure, my heart rate and my general well-being at a good pace and rate..I enjoy meditating.
