A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭

I currently take my HIV drugs two to four times daily. I want to find out how well people tolorate single tablet treatments compared to the older style twice daily tablets. When I recently tried one of the newer style once daily treatment,ie Biktarvy, I couldn't tolorate taking all the medicine in one single tablet daily. So I had to stop taking it, and return to my two to four times daily treatment. My body can cope with the older twice daily tablets, as the dose is much reduced compared to… read more

Members shared varied experiences with HIV medication regimens, with some finding success on single-tablet treatments like Biktarvy, Triumeq, and Symtuza, while others described needing multiple attempts to find the right combination or experiencing challenging side effects that required switching back to multi-dose schedules. Several members emphasized that everyone's body responds differently to treatment, with some metabolisms tolerating once-daily high-dose tablets better than others, and one member noting that spreading medication throughout the day works better for their system. A recurring theme was the emotional weight of daily medication as a reminder of diagnosis and loss, balanced by the practical relief of finding a regimen that works and maintaining undetectable viral loads.

Dang I hate taking meds daily I'm just getting use to it I'm actually healthy considering everything I'm dealing with. Wanted a different life outside this norm of of a loser vibe. I'm not happy bout life but I have to deal with it hoping to get rid of the rest of cancer in the next yr or two even it makes me feel crappy in mean time I wanted get rid of things that gave bad momentum moments. Wish I could possible get over these grudges I hold on bad systems. Been thinking how to let go and what not. Pills are bad memory of lost self to me. I would like to have a normal life of not telling people of myself and what I hate. Faced radical racist talk from family bout heing hiv taking pills reminds me everything. But I guess I'll just go back n try to be my best. Ready for new start of life if I can get one.

The tolerance of newer single tablet treatments compared to older twice daily treatments can vary from person to person. Here are some key points based on my knowledge base:

- Single Tablet Regimens: Most people with HIV today have the option to take just one pill once a day. These regimens combine multiple medications into a single tablet, which can simplify treatment and improve adherence. However, some individuals may experience side effects due to the higher dose of medication in a single tablet.

- Older Twice Daily Treatments: These regimens involve taking multiple doses throughout the day, which can be more challenging to manage but may result in fewer side effects for some individuals due to the lower dose per administration.

- Personal Tolerance: As you mentioned, some people may tolerate the higher doses in single tablet regimens well, while others, like yourself, may struggle with side effects and find that spreading the doses throughout the day is more manageable.

- Consultation with Healthcare Provider: It's important to work closely with your HIV care team to find the regimen that works best for you, considering both efficacy and tolerability.

It's surprising to know many people take two or more pills daily as part of their treatment. I take just one pill once a day. My med is Triumeq and has three different medications into one pill. I have never been in a regimen that is more than one pill daily. I started with Atripla, then Biktarvi, and now Triumeq.
