Members shared their varied experiences navigating HIV disclosure in the workplace, with several emphasizing that HIV is a protected class under the Americans with Disabilities Act and that disclosure is typically not required unless directly asked after hiring. Many community members described positive workplace experiences where colleagues were supportive and understanding, while others recounted painful stories of discrimination, job loss, and being driven out of positions despite legal protections. A recurring theme was the importance of knowing your rights, researching the ADA, keeping documentation ready, requesting reasonable accommodations through a doctor's letter without disclosing specifics, and connecting with legal advocacy organizations like Lambda Legal and the ACLU if discrimination occurs.

It is better to be truthful in situations of direct inquisition about HIV. It is a protected class under the ADA. Lying is not protected, and you are likely to be dismissed with no recourse.

I told the hospital that I was on methadone, and HIV infected. It did not get in the way of my employment. I told these things during my physical for work, AFTER I had been hired.

They cannot subject you to urine screening and a medical history until you are hired. Don't blow the UA!

Thanks for the info. @A myHIVteam Member❤️🤠

Everyone at work is cool with me having HIV. I'm not sure if it's right but I don't see a problem with it.

I've never had an issue with having HIV at the workplace. They are very by the book when it comes to the law and what they are allowed to do and not do. I downloaded the document anyway. You never know when something could change. Best to be prepared.
