Members shared deeply personal perspectives on whether to tell family about being HIV positive, with the strong consensus being that it is a deeply personal choice with no single right answer. Several members described mixed outcomes, from families who became closer and more supportive to situations where trust was broken and news was shared without permission. A recurring theme was to know your family well before deciding, prepare for any reaction, and prioritize your own emotional safety and peace of mind.

That's a pretty personal question ,..I think it's all up to the person. Its a very individualistic situation.

My family is small. My HIV generated a cancer and I told Mom about the cancer but not the HIV status. I told my sister both conditions and she was confident so I looked for her suggestion about telling Mom but she recommended not to do so because she thought my mom was not prepared. My sis told me that knowing that I had cancer was too much for Mom. But I was confident about my status, So my advice is to follow your heart and trust in your feelings.

I wish they never knew, I was very sick and almost died from AIDS not knowing I had it..so I did not have much choice but for my family to know. I don't like it that they know..

Be careful who you tell Family or not. I told my Mother and my brothers when I started meds after being diagnosed with HIV for 19 years. My brother told my daughter! I specifically asked mom amd my brothers not to tell my daughter…it’s a worry I did NOT want her to have! So be cautious.

I was blessed thank God to tell my parents they supported me my siblings and two in-laws family support helped me through it. In the beginning I didn’t have to deal with depression.
