Would You Participate In A Clinical Trial?

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Geneva, IL

With many antivirals and treatments coming up the pipeline , inevitably there will be treatments and trials here in the United States and abroad regarding the treatment and cure of HIV and other diseases like cancer.

Members shared deeply personal perspectives on participating in clinical trials for HIV and other conditions, with many describing their involvement in multiple studies dating back to the 1990s and expressing pride in contributing to medical progress even when facing difficult side effects. Several members offered practical insights, including the rigorous vetting processes that protect participants, the financial compensation that helped some support their families, and the reality that not everyone qualifies or feels comfortable with the risks involved. A recurring theme was gratitude and solidarity, with those who chose not to participate thanking the brave volunteers who helped bring treatments like protease inhibitors to market, while others emphasized that advancing science for future generations made any personal sacrifice worthwhile.

I have done several clinical trials while living on Oahu through Doctor's Cecilia Shikuma and Dominic Chow sponsored by the University of Hawaii at Manoa and State Dept of Health. This was done in the mid 90's and early 2000's, I was mostly in it for the money still raising up a young family and I must say that the pay was substantial. So yes, I will participate in another if it so presents itself here on Maui or Honolulu. I think these are quite beneficial and needed by our community tremendously. Progress, continue the course....

I have never participated in any. I'm with Happydays, they kinda scare me, what if they go the wrong way and make me worse. I thank all of you who have gone on and done them, I appreciate you!!
