Just recently I went out and bought a bike that I have been wanting for over 5 years. Most of my expenses go toward others and day-to-day things. Vacations and such are expenses that I put off until I know that everything else and everyone else including family and friends... are okay. I'm feeling a bit of guilt with this recent purchase as it is quite higher than I would spend on myself ... Any thoughts? 🤔

Members overwhelmingly encouraged someone who felt guilty about buying a bike they'd wanted for five years, with the consistent message being that self-care is not selfish but essential for being able to care for others effectively. Several members shared their own approaches to treating themselves, ranging from weekly small purchases and take-out meals to bigger investments like air conditioners and bikes, with many emphasizing the importance of budgeting for personal joy and viewing self-treats as goals met rather than indulgences. A recurring theme was reframing the bike purchase as an investment in physical and mental health, especially since it provides independence and freedom for someone who stopped driving due to a nervous condition, with the community celebrating this step toward prioritizing personal well-being.

You have to remember that you love others by loving yourself first. I get the same way when I buy my roses, or get my pedicure done, but I have realized that if it makes me happy and I’ve taken care of others I’m allowed my treat as well. Enjoy your bike, it’s well deserved

@A myHIVteam Member I had the standard speec bicycle but there was a real Pugeot Racing bike at a local bike shop. I had a pt job and I loved the feeling of fresh air filling my lungs and cycling was my escape at sunrise.
Because of the wide open frozen lake I needed an all terrain as well.
Once in Vancouver, cycling was bike fitted with panniers and market shopping.
I sold the racing cycle after being asked by city police on my speed. ‘Well officer, the speedometer cable snapped at 60 so I assume by the blur of the pavement, about 70’ trying to brake gradually threw the rubber rear break pads.
Pre pandemic I used staff travel passes every 6 weeks to visit friends.
