Has Anyone Taking Biktarvy Experienced Significant Weight Gain?

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Birmingham, AL

I was diagnosed HIV positive 8 months ago and started on Biktarvy. My HIV was VERY advanced and the Biktarvy has helped immensely. BUT I’ve gained 24 pounds so far. I’m a 5’2” female so that’s up 2 clothing sizes. And I wasn’t underweight before. (Seems I experienced every symptom of late stage HIV except wasting.) I have a ton of fairly expensive clothing that I can’t wear, my joints ache from the extra weight, and I hate looking in the mirror in my new “fat clothes”. But my doctor doesn’t… read more

Members widely confirmed experiencing significant weight gain on Biktarvy, with many reporting increases ranging from 14 to 80 pounds, often within just a few months of starting treatment, with several acknowledging the challenge of losing the weight despite exercise and dietary changes. Several members shared that switching to Dovato helped them stop gaining or even lose weight, as it contains only two medications and lacks TAF, a component in both Biktarvy and Genvoya known to be associated with weight gain. A recurring theme was the difficult emotional balance between gratitude for effective HIV treatment and frustration with unwanted physical changes, with members encouraging each other to advocate with their doctors about alternative medications.

Yes, weight gain is associated with TAF, one of the components of Biktarvy. I switched to Dovato and not only stopped gaining weight but lost weight.

Came here because I'm on Biktarvy and I've NEVER been this big. I'm a 5'3 male and have never been bigger than 140. I'm pushing 170 right now. I KNOW it's the meds...I only started gaining this weight when this became a daily regimen for me.

They are both good drugs in terms of efficacy. They will both work really well! Dovato has less drugs and no TAF which is know to cause weight gain. I don’t need that so My Doctor prefers me on Dovato

Remember Genvoya has 4 chemicals and Biktarvy had 3 but Dovato has only 2 and does the same thing. Let me or your doctor know if you have any questions.
