Primary And Secondary Insurance??
A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭

Hey guys. I’ve been really confused with how my insurance works and I’d appreciate any helpful information. So basically, I’m insured under my dad’s private health insurance (Aetna) and I have Louisiana medicaid as my secondary insurance. Will my dad be responsible for paying my deductibles/out-of-pocket expenses for my claims? Or will medicaid pay for everything?

*P.s.- sorry if these are silly questions. Using health insurance is still new to me and managing both my primary and seconday… read more

Have you seen a Ryan White case manager? They can answer these questions and more. Every case is different so when they have all the facts then you can get these questions answered.

I was told by my attorney to 'spend down' after I retired so I would qualify for programs based on low income. I own my own home and receive Social Security and a small pension. I keep my overhead low as well. In California we have MediCal which is a combo of State & Federal Medicaid programs. In addition I have Medicare part D which covers meds. There are also Ryan White funds available to help cover HIV meds specifically. I recently had the 12 week run of Harvoni for Hep C clearance. These assorted programs paid 100% of the cost which was $1000.00 per pill. Each program has semi-annual recertification dates so you have to keep on top of the paperwork. I have a social worker but it's unwise to assume she can keep up with dozens, if not hundreds of 6 month deadlines, recerts, appeals, etc. I also have Kaiser Senior Advantage Program which costs $200 out of pokect every month. Their co-pays & deductibles are kept in line by a new State program called PAI. If I keep up the current requirements, it also pays 100% for my labs, Xrays, Clinic visits, ER usage, etc. PAI is administered out of State by a 3rd party contractor. It's previous name was Magellan Inc. and before that it was called Ramsell Inc.of Oakland. So huge changes are happening all the time. A letter from the State Dept. of Public Health is worth it's weight in gold. It may inform you of changes in the program, new eligibility requirements, pending expiration dates, recertification changes, etc. I usually toss out the monthly avalanche of mail I get from Kaiser regarding my routine meds. But nothing from the health dept. or PAI gets tossed and I always answer their requests promptly. They usually want proof of income from Social Security or bank statement. Medicare also deducts $100.00 out of my S.S. check each month to pay for it's programs. PAI also wants proof of residency which is usually in the form of a utility bill or property tax assessment. From some of the responses in this HIV Q&A help venue, there are clearly people suffering from pre-dementia. With all my heart I want to express my concern for their well being. But I can't emphacize enough = we have to stay on top of the paperwork for these various programs. Any small glitch or omission and these services can be denied. If you have further questions, please contact me at = (Email address can only be seen by the question and answer creators) Thanks, Aloysius

usually the primary pays first, then the secondary. I think you may still have to pay copays and deductibles with your primary. I know I have 2 dental insurances and the 2nd one does not pay the deductible or copays of the first.
