I have been home twenty yrs now, and the scene around HIV/AIDS HEP C has changed, for the better. I only know of a couple of HIV+ people here in the Yukon. People are still hiding from their diagnose, and I see a few when I visit with my Specialist in town from Edmonton, once every 3-4 months she chks up on her poz people.
This territory is vast, and many do not live in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory-Canada, many live off the grid- the bush- and must make appointments to be seen. People still are hush about this disease, and the stigma attached to it. Hopefully, in time, people here will learn to trust. The Yukon is still going thru healing changes from Residential and the 60s scoop. People are aware that HIV/AIDS HEP C is still happening, and there is a slow change coming around. We need more 1st nation advocates here in the Yukon. Without change, no 1 grows positively.
