Members responding to the question about a possible HIV cure for Latin America by 2027 were largely not optimistic, with most agreeing a cure is unlikely in the near future. Several members noted that while HIV has technically been cured in rare cases through bone marrow transplants, those methods carry extreme risks and would not be practical for people already managing the virus well with daily pills or quarterly shots. A recurring theme was gratitude for how far treatment has come since the 1980s, paired with gentle humor and emotional honesty about living long-term with HIV.

No, not in the near future, but I hope one day.

I am not optimistic a cure will be found before 2050, if then. HIV caused, and continues to result in research on immune systems in mammals. There is more than one documented cases where HIV was cured. But not in an attempt to cure HIV, but rather curing other disease that resulted in curing a host of diseases. Look at those as a "reboot" of the immune system. A lot of people still die from killing off ones bone marrow and inoculation with donor bone marrow.

Doing that simply to cure HIV in someone where a quarterly shot, or a pill a day controls it would be too extreme for me; if it was even offered.

I mention this because HIV has in fact already be cured. So finding a cure has already happened. Finding a cure that can also carry massively less risk won't be simple.

I fear a lot of us Poz folk aren't appreciating the state of this infection in 2026 than in 1986. We've come a long way. Glad to have so many long term survivors here on MHT.
