Staying well hydrated is actually really important when living with HIV. Water plays a key role in keeping your body functioning well, especially while on antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Here's how water helps when living with HIV:

- Helps transport nutrients to and from your cells
- Reduces medication side effects
- Flushes out medications your body has already processed
- Helps regulate body temperature
- Prevents dehydration and constipation

A general guideline is to aim for at least 8 to 10 glasses of water or other fluids (like juices or soups) per day, and even more if you're physically active. That said, drinking *excessively* large amounts of water in a short period can cause a condition called overhydration, which can affect your body's electrolyte balance. This is worth mentioning to your doctor, especially since some medications can affect how your body processes fluids.

As always, your HIV care team is the best resource for personalized guidance on hydration and how it interacts with your specific treatment plan.
