Good morning Christopher. When I dealt with side effects (which at this point has been a while), I gave my self grace to do what ever I did when having a severe cold or flu. Plenty of water, rest, being pampered. My side effects usually didn't last long. When I first started Combivir, I would be green around the gills. My Doctor told me that if she didn't know better she would have told me I was pregnant. She told mew to keep saltine crackers on my night stand and eat a few before getting out of bed in the morning. Helped me get thru it. I pray that any side effects you may have be mild ones and are gone soon.

The prolonged erections were the hardest to deal with. I ordered the special POZ undies and that helped.

I imagine my body is certain way and when I exercise I concentrate on those body parts whether it be arms chest thighs ass or whatever. We are what we make of ourselves.

Managing HIV medication side effects is something many people navigate, and there are several practical strategies that can help. The good news is that many side effects tend to ease up within the first week or two of starting a new regimen.
Here are some approaches that can make a real difference:
- Time your doses wisely — If your meds make you tired, take them at night. If they cause stomach issues, take them with a meal (unless your specific medication says otherwise)
- Stay hydrated — Drinking 8–10 glasses of water daily can help reduce medication side effects and flush out what your body no longer needs
- Exercise regularly — Physical activity helps maintain a healthy weight, boosts strength, and may reduce the risk of some long-term ART side effects
- Eat well — A low-fat, high-fiber diet supports your immune system and helps your body absorb medications more effectively
- Limit added sugars — These can negatively affect your immune function and mood
- Try complementary approaches — Some people find relief through massage, acupuncture, or probiotics, though always check with your doctor first as some can interfere with HIV medications
- Mental wellness tools — Cognitive behavioral therapy or meditation can help manage stress and emotional challenges that sometimes come alongside treatment A myHIVteam member shared a helpful tip: "If the meds make you tired, take them at night. If meds make you hyper, take them in the morning. If they give you stomach problems, take them with a meal."
It can take a little trial and error to find what works best for your body, so keeping your doctor in the loop about any side effects you're experiencing is really important. They can help adjust timing or explore other options to make things more manageable.
