Members shared deeply personal definitions of friendship in the context of living with HIV, with many describing how the diagnosis reshaped or reduced their social circles. Several members emphasized qualities like loyalty, trust, non-judgment, and showing up through hard times as the true markers of a friend, with some noting that chosen friends often feel more like family than biological relatives. A recurring theme was the pain of isolation that can come with an HIV diagnosis, balanced by heartfelt stories of friendships that held strong, and a shared sense of community and belonging within the group itself.

When I was diagnosed it took me about a week to call my best friend and tell her. We have been friends for 30 years. I was terrified. When she answered the phone I couldn't even find the words. Through tears I asked her if she would love me no matter what. Her answer was... for life. We had shared so much over 30 years and telling her was the hardest words I have ever spoken. She never hesitated. She has never changed toward me. We live in different states and when she comes to visit we still sleep in the bed together just like we did as teens. It changed nothing. That is a friend.

I don't have any friends. Only my son's and grandchildren that's it. Hiv will rob you of your social life if you tell them. I don't waste my time on anyone outside my family.
