Great question! Here's a look at what the research says about caffeine (found in both tea and coffee) when living with HIV. It's worth noting that the studies are relatively small, so the findings are more of a guide than a definitive rulebook.
Potential Advantages:
- One small study found that higher caffeine intake was linked to higher CD4 counts and a lower viral load
- Coffee consumption was associated with a reduced risk of death in one larger study
- People who drank 3 or more cups of coffee performed better on cognitive tests in another study Potential Disadvantages:
- Caffeine can worsen sleep quality, which is already a common challenge for people living with HIV
- Poor sleep can negatively affect overall health, including CD4 count and viral load
- Caffeine can cause anxiety, shakiness, nausea, faster heart rate, and headaches
- Since caffeine can heighten anxiety and disrupt mood, it's worth being mindful of how it may interact with bipolar disorder management
The general safe daily limit is around 400mg of caffeine, but individual sensitivity varies. Switching to decaf is always an option if you want the comfort of a warm drink without the side effects.
Talking to your doctor about how caffeine might interact with any medications you're taking is always a smart move.

I think a lot of this depends on the person as different people will respond to the same thing differently. The biggest down side I can think of to coffee or tea (especially coffee) is that for every cup you drink, you must pee three in three separate rounds. I'm a weird one in that while coffee or tea perks me up, I don't get the jitters like a lot of people do for some reason.

Please - I finally found that I can have 1-2 cups of cold brew coffee
( what my body now tolerates)
I am the happiest pig in the sty
Please they can do all the studies they want - what it comes down to is moderation and the individual
Nothing more nothing less
What makes you happy and comfortable - in all aspects
