Enlarged Prostate Surgery, Pros And Cons.

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Brighton, England, United Kingdom

Im trying to decide whether or not to have Prostate Surgery. Tests have shown for my Prostate to be very enlarged but not cancerous. Theres a 10 percent risk from Prostate Surgery of a complete loss of sexual functions, and 24 hour Bladder Incontinence. In addition to this the risks of General Anaesthetic need to be born in mind. ie not waking up ever again
My current symptoms are nightime incontinence (I wear a disposible kit nightly to prevent leaking) and I have occasional daytime… read more

Members shared deeply personal experiences navigating the difficult decision of enlarged prostate surgery, with many emphasizing that only the individual can weigh their current quality of life against surgical risks like anesthesia complications and incontinence. Several members offered practical alternatives and reassurance, including medications like Tadalafil and Tamsulosin, procedures like UroLift and Aquablation, lifestyle modifications involving hydration and exercise, and calming perspectives on anesthesia safety based on their own surgical experiences. A recurring theme was the importance of building trust with specialists, conducting thorough research including SWOT analysis, getting second opinions, and ultimately making peace with whatever decision feels right for one's mental readiness and individual circumstances.

Mark7777. Aging. I'm 76 yrs. young. I have several health conditions that I'm prescribed medications for including HIV, GERD, HPV, cholesterol, hypertension, kidney monitoring, etc. Also, mental health is an issue where I was sexually abused during high school and college. I live alone but connect with others (friends and relatives) via zoom, skype, facetime, txt, emails, etc. Actively work out with weights and maintain muscle mass and keep weight in check. Healthy diet (I love sugar but keep this in check) with lots of fruits and vegetables. Protein is important however. Porn helps keep my libido active and consistent. People are judgmental about this but for some of us, its a useful tool for maintaining good/active health. Hope this helps.
