I have a county community services consultant work with the Ryan White Program, which is available here in Iowa. Check with your state to see if they participate in the program. It's been nothing but smooth sailing for me - Ryan White covers ALL of my pharmaceuticals, and pretty much any Medicare co-pays that are required.

Yes, there are several coverage options for people living with HIV in the United States:

1. Emergency Medicaid: If HIV is causing a medical emergency, you are eligible for emergency Medicaid coverage. This is legal for people who aren’t U.S. citizens under federal law.

I've only been denied one pre-approval specility drug and that was after Humania Medicare D approved it for 2 years and that was Egrifta for belly fat build up. First they told me my doctor used the wrong NDC code national drug code for it which was not true so I called Humania and their specility pharmacy said they no longer make the 2 mg. vial. Later I got a letter telling me they were unable to contact my doctor which is also not true. Speciality pharmacy managers are a real headache when trying to get approval. Finally my ID specialist said he was tired of dealing with them and I would have to get my regular doctor to prescribe it. I just gave up as they wanted. It is 6k a week and after a reduced belly for 2 years I began to worry about possible side effect with long term use as it's not been tested in those over 65. I even stopped using testosterone cypernate 200mg a week injections as most doctors want approve it because it increases red blood cells greatly or understand that HIV lowers a man's testosterone levels faster than usual. There is a doctor in another state as I live on Texas Oklahoma border who will prescribe it. It's does lower good chlorestrol and is really only used with active AIDS patients who are wasting awaym

I use Ryan White for one medication not covered by Medicaid. You can still qualify for Medicaid under Medicare. It comes down to income from SSI, and whether you fall below the Federal poverty boundary ($1670?) for a single person. I will still qualify. Even with delayed SSI (or SSD) I think you can qualify(?). This is a time when the pharmaceutical industry is on our side. They lobby to get paid by the taxpayer, and we benefit.
