A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭

Ive been so depressed and saddend that I infected my ex , who is only 28, in part because I feel like I might have robbed him about 10 or 20 years of his life because I am assuming his Biktarvi pills will wear on his liver and kidney eventually, shortening his life span by about a decade or so. Members offered compassionate reassurance to someone struggling with guilt over transmitting HIV to their ex-partner, with the overwhelming consensus being that modern medications like Biktarvi allow for a normal lifespan without significant shortening due to organ damage, and that unintentional transmission does not make someone a bad person. Several members emphasized the importance of focusing on one's own healing journey rather than martyring oneself for a partner who may not reciprocate care, noting that each person is ultimately responsible for their own health and wellbeing. A recurring theme was finding spiritual growth and meaning through unexpected hardship, with members encouraging the poster to see their HIV diagnosis as an opportunity for personal transformation rather than divine punishment.

The medication will ameliorate the physical aspects of HIV infection. I wouldn't assume that there will be any shortening of life @A myHIVteam Member.

However, he will have to negotiate the psychological impact of HIV as we have discussed amongst ourselves. Please invite him into myHIVteam when you feel it appropriate.

You are doing everything you can to help him get the lifesaving information & medical care needed. At some point, it will be up to him to take the reins of his health and psychological wellbeing.

You are a good man @A myHIVteam Member. We all make mistakes. None of this was intentional. You never wished this man any harm.

Thanks to advancements in HIV treatment, such as highly active antiretroviral therapy (ART) including medications like Biktarvy, people living with HIV can have a near-normal life expectancy, assuming they adhere to their treatment regimen, maintain regular healthcare appointments, and lead a healthy lifestyle. It's important to remember that individual outcomes can vary based on factors like the timing of diagnosis, the presence of other health conditions, and lifestyle choices.
