Did anyone ever experience relief when they found out they were positive? Some folks have share in support groups that they were relieved to find out they were positive because they were always worried about it. Is this a unique feeling, or are they wrong for feeling the way they do?

Asking for some friends....

Members shared deeply varied responses to the question of whether anyone felt relief upon testing positive for HIV, with the overwhelming majority describing initial reactions of shock, fear, denial, and devastation rather than relief. Several members explained that while their first response was panic or despair, they eventually found a different kind of relief in finally knowing their status, ending years of uncertainty, and being able to take concrete action through treatment and care. A recurring theme was the power of moving from shame and secrecy toward acceptance and community connection, with members describing transformative moments of coming out publicly, building relationships with healthcare providers, and finding strength in knowledge, support groups, and the ability to live healthy undetectable lives.

Relief was certainly NOT my immediate feeling when I was diagnosed. Not even a close 2nd!

@A myHIVteam Member. I read about a study that showed No News is harder on people than Bad News. Uncertainty is unbearable. People would rather get bad news because they can act on the bad news. Uncertainty leaves people hanging. If your life is so out of control that you could be positive every time you test... A positive result might be construed as a "relief." It's finally over, I no longer have to wonder.

I am glad to finally know why I am so fatigued and so lethargic.

I was definitely not relieved. I immediately went into shock, confusion and denial in the beginning before I came to terms with it.
