Members responded to someone confused about why HIV still poses risks despite being undetectable on Bictarvy, explaining that while medications effectively suppress the virus in the bloodstream, HIV hides in reservoirs throughout the body where antiretrovirals cannot fully reach or eliminate it. Several members clarified that current medications control rather than cure HIV, emphasizing that if someone stops taking their meds the virus quickly rebounds from these hidden pockets, which is why lifelong adherence is essential. A recurring theme was managing HIV as a chronic condition similar to diabetes, with the understanding that staying on medication, maintaining overall health, and keeping T-cells high are key to living well with the virus.

Further to what others have said, HIV ‘hides’ in parts of the body that the meds can’t effect. These are often organs or tissues that are resistant.

If a person stops taking the meds then the virus sees that the coast is clear and begins replicating until it’s up to previous levels and then on upwards

Because the medication does NOT get to the HIV that hides. Not all of the HIV is happily traveling through your blood. There are pockets in your body that it can hide in and replicate that medication can't touch.
