A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Port Washington, WI

It infected by day 7 and went to urgent care, get treatment. But my question is do we need to approach wound care differently? If so, how?

Members reassured someone newly diagnosed with HIV that wound care doesn't need to change significantly as long as CD4 counts remain adequate, emphasizing the same basic principles apply: cleaning with mild soap and water, avoiding harsh substances like alcohol or peroxide, changing dressings when needed, and taking antibiotics as prescribed. Several members with medical backgrounds and personal experience confirmed that while wounds may take a few extra days to heal and infections can be more common, proper care and attention to warning signs (especially below the knees where circulation matters most) will lead to good outcomes. A recurring theme was encouragement that adapting to a new normal takes time but becomes manageable, with members sharing that they eventually learned to handle minor injuries without worry while staying vigilant about seeking medical care when needed.

Don’t worry about it. Nothing is different.

As long as you take the antibiotics then it will be fine

As long as you are greater than 300 CD4 count, and less than 1000 viral load, your immune response should be adequate @A myHIVteam Member.

Wounds should be cleaned with mild soap & water. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, anything that burns... they do more harm than good to exposed tissues. Change dry dressings every other day, or when visibly wet or soiled.
