A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Barrie, ON

I checked my blood tests online and I saw that it was low at 0.4 for a long time now. Is that normal/good?

Members discussed the meaning and significance of a low CD4/CD8 ratio, with several explaining that CD4 cells fight infections while CD8 cells combat cancer and intracellular germs, and that a ratio below 1.0 may indicate immune system concerns that warrant preventive medications or closer monitoring. Several members shared their own ratio results and emphasized the importance of tracking trends over time rather than fixating on a single number, while noting that in some regions like the UK, viral load is prioritized over CD4 counts once someone is undetectable. A recurring theme was the value of self-advocacy, staying informed through trusted sources, and always discussing results with your doctor to understand what they mean for your individual health.

CD4 cells help the body fight infections. CD8 cells help fight cancer and germs that live inside your cells. The CD4:CD8 ratio test judges the strength of your immune system. It also tells your physician if you are at risk for opportunistic infections like pneumocystis pneumonia. Your physician may want to protect you by prescribing some medicines.

My last CD4:CD8 test result in Nov23 was 0.79.

yep. I might be wrong. Me and my dr went over this. I know she said that's a marker for having HIV. My cd4 is in the high 600's low 700's and I still have a low cd4% We have more cd8 than cd4 cells.
