Is Biktarvy Known To Cause Kidney Problems?
A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭

I've been taking Biktarvy for a little over 2 years. At my regular 6 month check in with my Dr., he noticed my kidney function #'s were low. Indicating my kidneys may not be functioning properly. I repeated my blood work a week later, and earlier this week everything was back to normal. Now he's really confused. I said "I'm an Enigma!" He thinks I may have been dehydrated, but how dehydrated do you have to be? I'm repeating my blood work in a month, and will have a f/u in 3 months instead… read more

I’ve been on Biktarvy since it came on the market. It was a life saver for me. I’ve been on HIV med since the days of AZT. Those cocktails back then truly did a number on your kidneys & liver functions. Add alcohol into the mixture and boy oh boy, that spells disaster. Since I went on Biktarvy and dropped alcohol all together, my kidney functions have stabilized but at my NP’s recommendation I take a Milk Thistle pill every day with my ARV pill and blood thinner.

It works for me. Keep checking and partner with your PCP to stay on top of it. It could have been timing. Something you drank, a little infection of some sort. Don’t forget, as a living organism, your body is constantly going thru changes, fighting outside pathogens, rebuilding and healing itself. It could have just been “that time of the month” . 🤭 Don’t worry about, worrying won’t resolve anything, but keep doing what you are doing. Stay on top of it and you’ll make the right choice.

Good luck on your journey…

No biktarvy contains bictegravir wich is a pro drug of dolutegravir and when bictegravir comes into the body it changes to the active metabolite dolutegravir triphosphate, emtricitabine doesn't cause kidney problems and TAF or the tenofoviralafenamide is a safe for the kidneys. Tenofovirdisoproxil causes bone loss and kidney damage and this was for many years the problem due this tenofovir version.

So don't worry to much about this med, I used it for 5 years,

I've been on biktarvy for a few years. Never had any side affects with liver or kidneys. I stay undetectable and my numbers are always where they should be or higher. So far I've been lucky that way with any meds I've been on, and I've been poz for 36 years.

I'd keep an eye on that. I'm pretty sure biktarvy can affect your kidneys. It was supposed to be better than Truvada. But they still mention kidney damage as a possible side effect.
