How Important Is Going Out And Flirting When It Comes To Being HIV Positive?
A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭

Does HIV destroy you confidence? Like if you're literally trying to believe that love is possible should you flirt with people?

I tested positve at age 18… I am nearly 54 now. I have had 2 marriages and 7 children. Yes, all 7 are my bioligical children. No, no one has been infected, nor has anyone tested positive.
The short answer to “Is love possible?” Is yes.
“Does it destroy your confidence?” I wouldn’t say “destroy”, but yes, it does have an impact on one’s confidence. I spent years alone, single, lonely… dark days, but I survived them.
I never looked for a way to bring it to any conversation. I took a more practical approach: if she showed signs of interest, and stated her interest, after expressing my own interest then I would be obligated to make her aware of my status.
Both of my marriages, I made certain she knew before I even thought about taking off my shoes.
First marriage lasted 8 yrs and gave me 4 children.
Currently still married to my wife… but nothing lasts forever… she is returning to her home in Japan after 23 years of marriage and 3 children.
That being said. I have been more than simply “fortunate”.
Advice is both free and worthless. Here is mine:
Stay hopeful. Stay honest. Stay healthy. If you enter into a relationship, then you will both need to understand that the health of one another becomes the business of you both.

Be yourself and flirt all that you want. There is nothing wrong in doing this until the time comes when you share bodily fluids. If you are undetectable based on your blood work, you wouldn't be spreading it to anyone else. But, keeping with your perceived moral standards, you feel obligated to divulge your having HIV believing it to be the right thing to do since we can reasonably expect the other party to do likewise, in most cases.
This is why it is important to establish a common ground between the two of you, in seeking something longer term and not just a "fuck and go" one-night "what was your name?" instance. Enjoy your life, flirt if it makes you feel good, flirt since it is in all our nature to do it. I am flirtatious because It's in my nature to play.

Wow alot of different experiences, from having kids , establishment of friendship before revealing status, all good advice! Having had this and not admitting that my confidence is taken a backseat. I mean I was trying to numb alot. And really do appreciate you guys sharing your experiences. I hope you all find common ground to push this conversation to the forefront of the next generation of minorities......so they aren't bogged down with; and empty rhetoric, consistent drug use/ drinking (in order to first/feel sexy), having empty sex with ppl who just want a night/FWB situation, or flat out want to flirt and never bed you to build them up/while tearing you down.
