Four older and common HIV medications contain Tenofovir Disoproxil Dumarate (TDF), are among the leading antiretroviral agents in HIV treatment. However it is now known that they often cause lose of bone density leading to osteopenia or osteoporosis. They also can cause severe kidney damage
Atripla (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, emtricitabine, efavirenz)
Complera (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, emtricitabine, rilpivirine)
Stribild (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate, emtricitabine, elvitegravir,… read more

@ Kentfrat1783 I'd be proactive with your doctor and explain the issue with HIV meds. Request the test so u know your status and can maybe start doing something about it if it has become a degenerative issue. Since this type of bone loss is chemically induced and not hereditary it's likely any degeneration can be reversed.

Yep, had regular DEXA scans for the last 10 years - I was initially on a clinical trial to test ARVs and bone density which is when I had my first one and was diagnosed with osteoporosis. Since changing from Truvada to Descovy, and having vit/mineral supplements, I am now osteopenic. I do recommend having the (painless) scans, even if just to get the required supplements - I’ve read too much on here about people suffering with their bones.

My tests results say my right femoral neck is -1.9 so 2 times more likely to get a fracture than a normal person. And my left formal neck is -2.6 so 4 time more likely to a fracture than a normal person :(
NOTE: -2.5 or less is the threshold for osteoporosis so at least the doctors caught it early.
