When Did You Start Medicine?

A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭
Grand Prairie, TX

I was recently diagnosed about 2 weeks ago. I got my levels tested and I believe I am at the undetectable level. I go into an HIV counselor in a few weeks. I would like to ask how quickly did others start taking medicine after being diagnosed? I would like to start medicine/treatment as soon as possible......

Members shared varied experiences regarding when they started HIV medication after diagnosis, with timelines ranging from immediately to 15 years, though the current medical consensus emphasized starting treatment as soon as possible regardless of CD4 or viral load numbers. Several members described becoming undetectable within weeks to months of starting medication, with one member going from a CD4 of 20 and viral load of 1.5 million to dramatically improved numbers after 18 months, while others highlighted resources like the Ryan White program and AIDS Healthcare Foundation for those without insurance. A recurring theme was the importance of staying committed to medication, monitoring lab results regularly, and not letting insurance or financial barriers delay treatment when ready to begin.

It's now scientifically proven that starting meds right away is the best option regardless of where your numbers are. The Ryan White program can help you if you don't have insurance. Also, AIDS Healthfare foundation is very popular for providing free care, although they're normally in major cities.

I started meds as soon as they let me, but I had an aids diagnosis.

I was diagnosed in October 2020 and began Biktarvy within the next month. My CD4 went immediately from 276 into the 500s and went undetectable within a month. So far so good.
