Does Anyone Have Advice On Dealing With A Problematic Pharmacy?
A myHIVteam Member asked a question 💭

I live in a very small town, that's not the problem its more a condition with the limited businesses that come with it. The nearest pharmacy to where I live I've used one from the same name in another town. The one in the current is being obstinate in every possible way. The case worker has gone her rounds, I go rounds on a daily basis to get even small things filled. Now as many have seen in my post my big med is in the limbo of getting filled. They say that the carrier of their supplies won't… read more

There are 2 things you can do.
1) let the pharmacy know 2 weeks in advance that you will need this med. It will give them time to order and have it on hand when you need it. It will also give a nice cushion in case there are problems getting it to the pharmacy. I live in a small town too, and my pharmacy didn't carry my HIV meds on hand either. They just told me to let them know 2 weeks ahead, so they could have them when I needed them.
2) sometimes I didn't have time to let the pharmacy know 2 weeks ahead of time, not even a week ahead at times. So then I went to a speciality pharmacy. A speciality pharmacy has EVERY SINGLE HIV medication on hand, then it is delivered to your door by UPS or FEDEX. Your medical case manager should be able to get you set up with a speciality pharmacy (also known as mail order pharmacy).

Thank you all for the advice I have contacted and getting looked into for the specialty pharmacy. Got six months covered so far. Again it is reassuring to see the direction of things to think and look into.

I get my HIV meds via mail order through my insurance. Actually, they won't do it any other way. But, they mail them to my local pharmacy where I get all my other meds filled. So, I can pick up the HIV meds when I go in to get my others. Originally, they insisted on mailing them via USPS, UPS or FedEx. But, as I live out in the Country, in the woods, the delivery to the house is not safe or secure. They have choices: mail to home, mail to my doctor or mail to my pharmacy. I think almost every specialty pharmacy (HIV meds are considered "speciality") has these choices now, by law, because of a recent lawsuit.
